When Emma Butler arrived in Chicago from Ireland, she worked in two decidedly different areas: computer science and hospitality. However, an introduction to a top-producing loan officer opened her eyes to the mortgage industry, and she quickly saw that she could merge her two interests, numbers and personal relationships, into an exciting career. Now, 18 years later, Butler is a successful lender who still loves the business. “I think most people fall into mortgage lending one way or the other; it’s not really planned, and then, if they’re like me, they get hooked and can never leave,” she says.

Having a computer science background has proven to be a significant benefit. “Obviously, being ‘techy’ in this industry helps because new platforms and ways of doing business are constantly emerging,” Butler states. Her background also serves her clients well in terms of problem-solving, foreseeing the steps in a process and process implementation.

Clients appreciate her team’s communication and engagement, with hospitality remaining a cornerstone of Butler’s business, whether she’s entertaining clients or referral partners. “Bringing people together is something the Butler Group loves to do,” she shares. “There is not one person I work with that I wouldn’t love to enjoy a meal with. When you have accomplished that in your business, then it’s no longer work.”

With her love for numbers and knack for remembering details, Butler enjoys the process of structuring even the most complex loans. She takes the time to understand each client’s unique financial situation, needs and goals, and her years of experience help her find just the right solution. “Nothing can compare to experience,” she says. “In a challenging market, it keeps you levelheaded. You know the actions you need to take and that these actions will pay off. Experience gives you the ability to foresee obstacles and have a plan in place if they arise.”

Away from the office, Butler enjoys working out, traveling, and, of course, entertaining.
