Once again, Chicago ranks among the best cities in the world, according to Time Out magazine’s annual list. This time, the Second City came in at No. 11.
But what exactly makes the “best” cities so great? Time Out surveyed 18,500 city locals from across the globe for insights on their hometowns. Respondents discussed food, nightlife, culture, affordability and overall vibe, with “livability” emerging as a key factor.
As for Chicago, the city’s 77 distinct neighborhoods, summer festivals and vibrant food scene all contributed to its high ranking. Chicago came in at No. 1 when it came to food and drink, specifically, and No. 2 for nightlife. It was crowned the “most beautiful” city on the list as well.
But Chicagoans already know this. As Time Out Chicago Editor Jeffy Mai noted, “One thing’s clear: Chicagoans love their city … Locals in Chicago were also most likely to say they loved their neighborhood.”
The top 10 cities that preceded Chicago in the new ranking include:
- Cape Town, South Africa
- Bangkok, Thailand
- New York City, USA
- Melbourne, Australia
- London, England
- New Orleans, USA
- Mexico City, Mexico
- Porto, Portugal
- Shanghai, China
- Copenhagen, Denmark
