The Second City is second best — in the world

by Emily Mack

We all know Chicago as the Second City; the nickname came about after the Great Chicago Fire, when the town was, literally, built twice. But a recent survey by Time Out gives that moniker a new meaning.

Chicago ranked No. 2 on the magazine’s list of the 53 best cities in the world. Based on a survey of more than 20,000 readers, many colorful factors were taken into consideration — including nightlife, restaurants, museums and local culture — as well as more practical attributes, like walkability, public transit and sustainability.

Trailing only Edinburgh, Scotland, Chicago was highlighted for its strong community spirit. As the list noted, 55% of its residents described Chicago as “resilient.” And coming out of the pandemic, that appears truer than ever. Another study by Time Out ranks Chicago as the No. 4 most fun city in the world.

The article also notes the city’s unbeatable food scene: 96% of respondents favored Chicago for its food and drink. And it’s no wonder why. The city boasts mom-and-pop options from every imaginable culture, as well as more Michelin-starred fare.

The full list of the top 10 cities is as follows:

1. Edinburgh, Scotland
2. Chicago, Ill.
3. Medellín, Colombia
4. Glasgow, Scotland
5. Amsterdam, Netherlands
6. Prague, Czech Republic
7. Marrakech, Morocco
8. Berlin, Germany
9. Montréal, Québec, Canada
10. Copenhagen, Denmark
