Who’s moving to Chicago?

The first half of 2025 brought a wave of moving activity across the nation. A new report from U-Haul identified the most common states of origin for do-it-yourself movers who relocated to Chicago. 

Topping the list were Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Texas and Ohio, followed by Florida, Missouri, Tennessee, Iowa and Colorado.  

U-Haul identified Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Detroit, St. Louis and Dallas as the top cities of origin for new Chicagoans.  

The main feeders within Illinois were Champaign, Peoria, Bloomington, Springfield and Calumet City.
