Weichert Realtors-First Chicago offered a two-day promotion in May, offering a free Smart Car, as well as 10 percent off the purchase price on May 14 and 15 (the properties must be closed on by July 30) to anyone who bought a two or three bedroom condo at 550 N. St. Clair in Chicago.

The Smart Car was a 2011 model, valued at $14,300, according to the press release, with taxes license and title fees waived.

Ron Ruby, managing broker, said that the event was an overall success, but may have been slightly doomed as a result of the weather that weekend-which consisted of rain and 40-degree temperatures.

“We got a lot of buzz, and that was a good thing,” Ruby said of the event, which resulted in the sale of one condo and a pending negotiation of another. Ruby said the buyer had already demonstrated “slight interest,” but he believes that the added bonus incentive was what truly sealed the deal.

The company recognized the opportunity as a great way to address the current focus on environmental awareness, and as the building is a Smart design building, they thought offering a Smart Car was an ideal match. As consumers are also aware of the rising gas prices, a Smart Car is seen as a better choice.

First Chicago is also in the process of developing a similar buying incentive in July, when they expect to offer a free scooter, said Ruby.
