Agent Snapshot: Tammy Barvian, Broker/Owner, Barvian Realty, Plainfield

tammy-barvian

Tammy Barvian is the broker/owner of Barvian Realty in Plainfield.

Where did you grow up? I grew up in Western New York, in a suburb of Buffalo.

What is your favorite free-time activity? Spending time with my husband and children, exercising, running, vacationing and being on the water or beach.

What do you do to relax when you’re stressed? Go for a run.

If you weren’t an agent, what would you be? My most favorite job is being a wife and mom. If I wasn’t an agent, I’d probably just do that full-time.

If you could have lunch with a well-known figure (living or not), who would it be and why? I’d like to have lunch with Princess Di. She was such a dynamic person, full of life and good deeds.

Where is your favorite place to hang out? On Bonita Beach in Florida.

What do you love most about the industry? I love to help educate clients about the process of buying or selling a home. I especially love to work with first-time homebuyers because it’s a very exciting time for them. I enjoy meeting new people and building new relationships while maintaining past ones, and keeping clients for life.

How do you distinguish yourself from the crowd of agents? I have a very aggressive marketing plan and I work by referral. I communicate with my clients on a regular basis and treat them as if they were family.

What is the most difficult aspect of your job? In this market, the most difficult aspect of my job is usually being the bearer of bad news to sellers when I tell them how much their home is currently worth. Many have no equity and are upside down/short sales.

Where do you go to network and meet new clients? I am a member of the Plainfield Chamber of Commerce and attend their networking events, and I also belong to two referral groups in the Plainfield area.

What has been your greatest accomplishment? Personally, being married to a wonderful man for almost 20 years and raising 17-year-old twin boys. Professionally, being able to survive as an agent in this market.

What was the last good movie you saw or book you read? The Proposal.

What is your favorite restaurant? My most favorite restaurant is Chef’s Restaurant in Buffalo, New York. They have the best spaghetti Parmesan!

Architecturally speaking, what is your favorite building in Chicago? The Art Institute.

What kind of car do you drive? A Yukon XL.

Smartphone or paper? Smartphone.

What is your favorite city after Chicago? Boston.

In 10 words or less, what is your advice for someone new to the industry? Hard work and perseverance pay off.
