Basel Tarabein, Broker/Owner, RE/MAX At Home, Rolling Meadows

What was your first job in the realty industry? A real estate salesperson with RE/MAX.

Where did you grow up? Damascus, Syria.

What is your favorite free-time activity? I enjoy spending time in the city of Chicago, riding my motorcycle around town, swimming and living the good life.

If you could have lunch with a well-known figure (living or not), who would it be and why? I would love to have lunch with Michael Jordan. I respect the fact that he always set his goals and did whatever it took to achieve them. He also took more shots than any other player in his days, and that is why he succeeded.

Where is your favorite place to hang out? I love the city of Chicago. With thousands of restaurants to choose from, you will never be bored.

What do you love most about the industry? I love my job, and this is why I feel like I have the day off after 12-hour days of work. The thing that I love the most about real estate is the fact that it has no limits. You can truly be everything you want to be: you can make $10,000 per year, or you can make that in two hours; the choice is 100 percent yours.

Where do you go to network and meet new clients? I follow the “ABN” rule, which stands for “always be networking.” I have the natural ability to network without trying. I have done it for so long that it has become second nature. I network everywhere and anywhere, from the second I wake up until I go to bed.

What has been your greatest accomplishment? I was able to start my real estate business from nothing (right out of real estate school), and made $10.6 million in sales in only 12 months. I was named the Rookie of the Year back in 2000. That is something I still am very proud of.

What was the last good movie you saw or book you read? The last good movie I saw, that I still laugh every time I watch, is Analyze This. The last book I read that I truly liked was “The Thank You Economy.”

What is your favorite restaurant? Santorini Restaurant in Greek Town, Chicago.

Architecturally speaking, what is your favorite building in Chicago? The Trump Tower.

What is your favorite city after Chicago? Paris.

What’s your favorite real estate smartphone app? Documents to Go.
