Telling our story, shaping our future

by Lutalo McGee

Change is constant in our industry, but so is our capacity to adapt, lead and shape the future.

As I write this, our leadership team is entering strategic planning — a time to listen, reflect and chart our path forward. We’ll be addressing the realities our members face: affordability challenges, lawsuits, professionalism and the changing expectations of our clients. But more than anything, we’ll focus on how we prepare Chicago REALTORS® to thrive in what’s next.

Our mission at the Chicago Association of REALTORS® is to unite all facets of the real estate industry, advocate for housing opportunities and support the economic vitality of every Chicago neighborhood. But this mission only matters if we live it out loud — by ensuring that every Realtor, every voice and every community is represented in our vision of the future.

And in our work as Realtors, that’s exactly what we do. Every time we help someone buy their first home, rent an apartment in one of our many vibrant neighborhoods or open a storefront for their business, we’re doing more than completing transactions; we’re building communities. We are the bridge between dreams and opportunity.

That’s why it matters how we tell our story. The narrative around our profession doesn’t always reflect the full impact Realtors have on people’s lives. Too often, the focus is on the market — prices, interest rates or commissions — without recognizing the human side of what we do. It’s our responsibility to help you tell this story.

To support that, the association is continuing to invest in tools that amplify the Realtor voice. Our consumer-facing website, BuySellOwnChicago.com, offers trustworthy, shareable resources REALTORS® can use to educate clients about homeownership, maintenance and the market. These tools help reinforce our credibility and showcase the Realtor difference.

We’re also strengthening our public affairs efforts to ensure our voice is heard in the media, as well as in City Hall, Springfield and Washington, D.C. Through our D77 initiative, we’re connecting Realtors to every Chicago neighborhood, such as collaborating with chambers, TIF boards and local officials, to make sure housing and economic opportunity remain priorities in all 77 communities. Representation isn’t symbolic; it’s strategic.

Our greatest strength remains our people. Realtors are small-business owners, entrepreneurs, risk-takers and community shapers. We are the backbone of local economies and the heart of the American dream. Our collective voice is powerful. When REALTORS® speak, we speak for the stability of families, the security of homeowners and the strength of our neighborhoods. Our strengthened public affairs department will work to tell these stories.

This is a pivotal moment for our profession. There are challenges ahead, but also tremendous opportunities. By listening, planning and working together, we can ensure our association and our members are ready — not just to respond to change, but to lead through it.

Because when Realtors thrive, communities thrive. And when we lead with purpose, we build a future worthy of every voice we represent.

Lutalo McGee is president of the Chicago Association of REALTORS®.
