Expanding pathways to sustainable homeownership

Homeownership remains one of the most powerful pathways to building generational wealth in the United States. Yet today, as our industry navigates affordability challenges, limited housing inventory and evolving policy discussions, expanding access to sustainable homeownership remains one of the most important priorities for the real estate profession.

Recent data from the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals’ 2025 State of Hispanic Homeownership Report reinforces just how critical the Hispanic market is to the future of housing. In 2025, Hispanic homeownership reached a record 10.2 million households, following a net gain of 441,000 new Hispanic homeowners in a single year.

Even more significant, Hispanic households were responsible for the nation’s net homeownership gain, offsetting declines in other demographic groups. Without Hispanic buyers, the United States would have experienced a net loss in homeowners, underscoring the essential role this community plays in sustaining the housing market.

At the same time, the report highlights an important reality: Demand continues to outpace opportunity. The number of Hispanic households grew by more than 1 million in 2025, representing over 90% of total household growth nationwide. This rapid growth signals strong future homebuying demand, but it also exposes ongoing challenges: limited housing supply, affordability constraints and access to sustainable credit.

These trends are not just statistics; they are a call to action for our industry.

Here in Chicago and across the surrounding communities we serve, these national trends are reflected locally. Many of the buyers entering the market are first-generation homeowners navigating rising costs, competitive conditions and limited inventory. This makes the role of the real estate professional even more critical, not just as a facilitator of transactions, but also as an educator, advocate and trusted guide.

Organizations like NAHREP play a vital role in advancing solutions that support long-term, sustainable homeownership. Through research, advocacy and leadership development, NAHREP continues to elevate the conversation around housing policy and economic opportunity, while equipping professionals with the tools needed to better serve their communities.

As the 2026 President of NAHREP Chicago, I have the privilege of working alongside a dedicated network of real estate professionals, mortgage lenders and industry partners who are committed to this mission at the local level. Our focus is on translating these national insights into meaningful action through education, collaboration and leadership development.

NAHREP’s initiatives, including the State of Hispanic Homeownership Report and the Hispanic Wealth Project, provide a road map for both industry professionals and policymakers. From increasing housing inventory to improving access to responsible credit and strengthening financial literacy, these priorities are essential to ensuring that homeownership remains attainable for future generations.

At the chapter level, NAHREP Chicago is committed to empowering our members with the knowledge and resources needed to navigate today’s evolving market. Through industry events, policy discussions and professional development opportunities, we continue to create spaces where professionals can grow, connect and stay informed. One example is our upcoming “Commercial Unlocked” event on May 20, designed to provide insight into commercial real estate opportunities and help agents expand their knowledge in an evolving market.

Personally, my work as a Realtor has always been grounded in three core pillars: honesty, integrity and community. Real estate is about far more than transactions. It is about helping families build stability, create opportunities for the next generation and establish roots in the neighborhoods they call home.

Looking ahead, the data is clear: The future of homeownership in the United States is closely tied to the success of the Hispanic community. As industry professionals, we have both an opportunity and a responsibility to respond by staying informed, advocating for thoughtful housing policies and working collaboratively to expand access to homeownership.

When we lead with knowledge, purpose and a commitment to service, we not only strengthen our industry. We help ensure that the dream of homeownership remains within reach for generations to come.
