A real estate sales career has always been about much more than buying and selling houses. It’s about families‚ it’s about communities and it’s about helping people realize one of the most important milestones of their lives with homeownership. At its heart‚ though‚ it is about providing guidance and navigating the pitfalls and difficult moments with the patience and persistence required to get the deal done. It’s a commitment to service.

That is also what brought me to the Veterans Association of Real Estate Professionals and led me to volunteer as president of the Chicago chapter. Like many Realtors, I joined because I wanted to serve in an organization where the people I worked with were passionate about real estate. What I have learned in the last seven years is that our mission is not just about educating the real estate community.

When most people think of VAREP‚ they think VA loans. This is a great place to begin. VA loans are an important pathway to homeownership. But we do much more. We fight for legislation to protect housing opportunities‚ support sustainable homeownership and protect the rights and benefits veterans earned through their service. We partner with policymakers and industry leaders to ensure these benefits are preserved well into the future.

That work has never been more important.

We are also working hard to rebuild and revitalize our Chicago chapter. Vice President and Immediate Past President Eric Johnson‚ Sr. as well as myself and our Government Affairs Director and Veteran Board Member, Jerry Cox‚ have served our chapter for the past seven years. Our new Treasurer, Aleita Anderson, recently joined the board‚ and we’re continuing to seek board members who will help us grow our capacity to accomplish our mission.

The housing market keeps developing. Homeownership remains out of reach for many and inventories are mixed‚ as obstacles toward homeownership rise. At the same time‚ veterans are faced with those challenges to their benefits that require sustained advocacy and protection. Those benefits do not come automatically; they therefore require our willingness to educate‚ advocate and lead.

One of the greatest lessons I learned as chapter president is that effective change is never achieved by the efforts of a single person‚ but rather, is produced by individuals choosing to invest their time‚ expertise and energy for something greater. With every educational event‚ legislation‚ community partnership and, yes‚ even golf outing‚ we have the opportunity to open a new avenue for collaboration.

Throughout my career in residential real estate‚ real estate education and back again to the selling side‚ I have been reminded of what I know to be true. At the end of the day‚ the best real estate agents are educators. And above all else‚ every client deserves someone who can help them make informed choices confidently. That philosophy has never been more relevant. While access to information has expanded‚ information in isolation doesn’t translate to consumer trust. We will need to step in as an advisor‚ an advocate and a trusted professional who will help navigate a process that may be one of the most important financial decisions of their lives.

Organizations like VAREP help educate and develop these individuals. I am hopeful that we continue to grow so that our successful transactions create impact beyond the closing day. I am grateful for having served VAREP as a board member and chapter president‚ but I am more grateful for the reminder of those who lead and serve with us. Service can have a ripple effect.

Our veterans answered the call to serve our country. Supporting them and protecting the rights and benefits they have earned is one meaningful way we can answer the call to serve them.
