‘Octagonal’ homes are the most desired in Chicago

by Emily Mack

According to Zillow scrolling, octagonal homes are the most popular style in the United States — and that holds true in Chicago.

Utilizing Zillow filter data, American Home Shield (AHS) looked at the daily views for home listings associated with certain architectural styles across each state and major city.

Nationwide, octagonal homes earn a median of 56 views per day, more than any other style on the AHS list. And that trend is visible in Chicago, where listings in the geometric style earn a median of 42.6 views per day. The city’s signature bungalows fit into this aesthetic.

Statewide, though, the ranch style is most popular, with a median of 102.6 views per day,

Nationally, the octagon style was followed by stick style, ranch style, neo-Mediterranean, shingle style, Dutch colonial, Cape Cod, prairie style, townhome style and mid-century modern.

However, certain architectural styles don’t get much love at all on Zillow. The least popular style in the U.S. is shipping container style, with listings getting a median of only 2.8 views per day. The shipping container style was followed by tidewater style, tiny homes, Beaux Arts style, art deco, new traditional style, federal style, Art Moderne, A-frame and log cabin.

In Chicago, the least-popular home style is the Craftsman, with those listings earning less than a median 14 views per day. Meanwhile, Illinois’ least popular style is the tiny home, with those scaled-down structures earning a median 3.1 views per day.
