Jan Robertson Broker at Coldwell Banker — McMullen

Where did you grow up? Logan Square

Growing up, what did you want to be? I wanted to be a legal secretary.

If you could meet any well-known figure (living or not), who would it be? Michelle Obama: She is a positive female role model for young women. We don’t have enough of those in the world today.

Where is your favorite place to hang out? Martha’s Vineyard. Mostly in July; sometimes in October as well. I’ve been doing this for over 20 years. This is my treat to myself for the long days I put in.

What do you love most about the industry? I love finding the perfect buyer for the sale. I always tell clients that “houses talk to people.” They usually don’t understand this until it happens to them. Then it becomes an aha moment, and they get it immediately. Watching it happen is beautiful!

How do you distinguish yourself from the crowd of agents? I always do what I say and say what I do. After nearly four decades in this business, I’ve learned there are no shortcuts.

What is the most difficult aspect of your job? Breaking bad news to a client, no matter what it is

What’s your favorite meal in Chicago? I find myself at Moretti’s in Edison Park more often than not.

Architecturally speaking, what is your favorite building in Chicago? Tribune Tower is an amazing, beautiful, neo-Gothic skyscraper. I might add that our skyline is just as beautiful and often overlooked when driving on the highway going to and from the city. I always point out to my grandchildren how beautiful it is.

What kind of car do you drive? Hybrid all the way. I am driving a Prius V at the moment, but I own two other hybrid cars as well. My next new car will be a hybrid no matter what.

What is your favorite city after Chicago? Boston: It has the feel of Chicago.

In 10 words or less, what is your advice for someone new to the industry? Work hard, stay strong, be faithful and don’t give up!
