There are more than 44 million immigrants living in the U.S. They account for about 13.6 percent of the total population, and together represent billions in annual real estate transactions – and Chicago is one of the eight cities best at attracting their business, according to a new report from Abodo.
Here is the full rankings:
1. New York
2. Los Angeles
3. Miami
4. Washington, D.C.
5. Houston
6. Chicago
7. San Francisco
8. Boston
Since 2013, the city has attracted 169,519 new immigrants, helping bolster its foreign-born population and lending credence to Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s 2012 claim that Chicago would become “the most immigrant-friendly city in the world.”
Abodo’s report describes the Windy City’s foreign-born population as “about 30 years old, of Asian or Latin American descent (primarily from Central and Eastern Asia and Mexico), and likely pursuing an education.” In fact, not only are more than 50 percent of school-aged immigrants in the city currently attending college, but 32.2 percent of them already hold a college degree – the highest percentage of any of the eight cities recognized in Abodo’s rankings.
