The Historic Chicago Bungalow Association (HCBA), a non-profit organization dedicated to the maintenance and preservation of Chicago’s signature home, is working to make the cold months more tolerable for vintage home owners – while saving them some money – through an EnergySavers Grant program.

The grant, valued at $3,600, was set up by HCBA to improve thermal performance and reduce energy consumption in historic bungalows around Chicago by installing attic insulation and wind sealing along walls, windows, foundations and other areas where heat loss occurs in older brick homes.

Four thousand Chicago homeowners have already undergone HCBA’s weatherization contractors’ energy assessment of their home and are benefiting from upgrades made through the program. To qualify for this grant, homeowners must meet several criteria: their home must be a HCBA-certifiable Historic Chicago Bungalow; they must be a member of HCBA; and their income can be no greater than 80 percent of the area’s median household income. If homeowners meet those requirements, they can apply for the grant at HCBA’s energy efficiency webpage. Those who have already received a grant from HCBA in the past are not eligible for the EnergySavers Grant.
