The Best Business Models: Team, Partnership, or Stay on your Own?

by Chicago Agent

The debate over whether to start a team or partnership often revolves around money (and is also a reason why, partners especially, should each sign a partner agreement – see our “Partnership Agreements” sidebar). Can you earn more as a team? Should you split the commissions 50/50, even if one partner did more work on a sale than another? McLaughlin said those are the questions she gets asked the most by agents considering a partnership. For them, McLaughlin and McInerney’s partnership means double the contacts and more money than if they worked independently. For instance, in 2002, they have earned $21 million; 2003, $26 million; 2004, $45 million; and in 2005, $21 million. From 2006 until 2011, their earnings were up and down, but as of right now for 2012, they earned $21 million in pending and closed sales, and they are the No. 2 agent team in Lake Forest.

In addition, McInerney said that $17.3 million of this year’s sales volume was primarily handled by her – quite a difference from her start in 2001.

Although they decline to reveal how they split commissions, both say they are happy with their arrangement. “We have an enormous amount of respect for each other,” McLaughlin said. “We’re best friends. We’re family,” added McInerney.

I’ve several rsonaes1, Personally I find it a lot cheap to book by myself as I don’t go to touristy places.2, I’ve been told something was impossible by a travel agent only to find it was harder to arrange but not impossible.3, Flexibility, the travel agents seem to have set schedules as to when to travel by flights and certain preferred airlines.
