Sharon Fine, Gold Coast Realty - Chicago

What was your first job in the realty industry?
I started my real estate career at Visual Properties as a leasing agent. I had a temporary leasing license for three months while taking the course for my salesperson license. I focused primarily on the Gold Coast. Working while taking the course inspired me because I wanted to do much more than leasing apartments. However, the knowledge I gained about rentals in the Gold Coast was tremendous.

Who inspires you?
Dean Chalmers, because of his guidance, intelligence and headstrong, positive attitude.

What is your favorite free-time activity?
Free time? What’s that? I feel like in this business even on my free time I’m looking for listings. I love Chicago in the summer. You can usually find me anywhere near the lake.

How did you learn the business?
I learned the business by throwing myself right into the mix. I had no experience, but I had lots of drive and passion, and with time I was able to find my niche. I am confident in the information I provide to my clients, and I always make people feel comfortable. I am still learning every day and looking for ways to improve and expand my business. In this industry, the sky is the limit.

What was your most difficult sale, and how did you succeed?
I was working with a gentleman recently who had some extremely unique and, perhaps, even unreasonable requests. After a significant amount of time and many units later, my around-the-clock, undying attention to the matter and to him, translated into my magic wand.

What is the most difficult aspect of your job?
I remain my own toughest critic. I am never satisfied until I am confident my client is happy with my work. I will be truly convinced only when I am hired to make them happy once again.

What was your worst job, and what did you learn from it?
Guarantee Trust Life — I worked in the customer service department. I was young and, although I was compensated fairly, I was confined to a cubicle and, consequently, felt trapped all day. However, it was there that I learned how to be patient with people, which has helped me tremendously in my current profession.

Where do you go to network and meet new clients?
I am always networking! I attend networking events at least twice a month. They are usually held at a nice lounge or hotel. It’s a good way to meet other people in the industry. I always make sure to take business cards with me everywhere I go, as you never know who you are going to meet. I am very social and enjoy meeting new people. I enjoy going to broker tours and building events and usually attend those once a week. That said, the majority of my clientele is referred to me by past clients. This is what I am most proud of.

What has been your greatest accomplishment?
After living in Israel for many years due to family circumstances, I had to journey to the United States and learn a whole new culture and language. Not only do I feel as though I adapted incredibly well to my new environment, but I also found a field about which I am incredibly passionate.

Where would you like to be in five years, professionally?
I hope to be further immersed in every facet of this profession. I hope this is not too over the top, but I actually do love what I do.

Architecturally speaking, what is your favorite building in Chicago?
311 West Wacker — I love the history behind the building as well as it’s beauty. It is the most visible skyscraper at night and the “crown” at the top is a large representation of the engagement ring given from the architect to his wife.

In 10 words or less, what is your advice for someone new to the industry?
Treat every client as if they are your most important.
