Choosing a career in real estate was an easy decision for Steve Porter. He grew up watching his father build homes throughout the western suburbs.

“I view real estate as a people business,” says Porter, owner and managing broker of Redefined Residential. “The client comes first, and our service to them has had a direct impact on our ability to drive business.”

Redefined Residential serves everyone, from first-time homebuyers to investors, in neighborhoods on the northwest side of Chicago and surrounding suburbs.

Named a Chicago Association of Realtors Top Producer four times now, including 2017, Porter has recently increased his business 125 percent. He is a Certified New Home Specialist and Residential Construction Certified, designations that helped him develop a niche educating clients in every aspect of homebuying.

Knowing that life can be stressful on its own, Porter takes the time to understand each individual’s personal situation and make the entire process enjoyable and seamless as possible. “Clients tell me that they are thankful for the step-by-step guidance I provide by educating them on the risks and rewards of homebuying,” he says. “Being an advocate for your client is key to building a trusted partnership with them.”

Furthermore, if he says he’s going to do something, he does it. Ambition and a positive attitude are the two attributes Porter says have led to his success.

“Real estate is as changeable as the weather,” he says. “If you live in Chicago, you know that can be quite a ride.”
His advice: Set goals that challenge you to continue to grow as a person and as a professional, and learn not to ride the constant highs and lows while keeping a positive focus on reaching your next milestone. “Only then will you see progress,” he says.

Porter tackles marketing a property from all angles, including social media, custom video tours, canvassing neighborhoods and interactive electronic brochures. As a CAR Top Producer, he has access to the Top Agent Network platform, which allows him to share his listings with other industry leaders before they hit the MLS.

Finding a better work-life balance has allowed Porter to spend more time with his wife and two young daughters. When he needs to recharge, he sneaks in a round of golf.
