For Jim Streff, a broker at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty Group, the skill that has been instrumental in his success for the past seven years is his extensive knowledge of real estate. He works with buyers and sellers in neighborhoods he knows best, such as Jefferson Park, where he grew up, or Logan Square, where he lives now. “I’m able to give insights into the area with regards to restaurants, new developments and more that really make buyers comfortable and makes listings easier to sell for my clients,” he says.
Streff also works with investors and developers to help clients who purchase multi-unit buildings, condos and single-family homes to either rent out or flip. His testimonials often refer to his knowledge, his responsiveness and his great customer service. “I want my clients to make the most informed decisions possible, and I keep their best interests at the top of my priority list,” Streff says.
It’s no surprise then that Streff had the strongest year in his real estate career in 2017, when he set a goal of surpassing $10 million in sales and was well on his way after closing his highest sale to date last February, a five-unit building in Lake View for over $2 million. He soon found himself receiving calls from past clients who were some of his first buyers now wanting to upgrade. “This was the biggest turning point in my career, propelling me to finishing the year with 48 transactions and beating my goal by $5 million to get to $15 million in volume,” he says.
Streff reached another goal when he started his own team halfway through 2017. “I learned how to sell real estate by surrounding myself with successful real estate agents and seeing how they were running their business,” he says. “I think it’s important for new agents to network with other agents as much as possible. It gives insight to how other people run their business and can help to get some ideas on changes to your own business model.”
Streff earned the 2017 Chairman’s Circle Gold Award from Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty Group, achieved recognition as a 2017 Chicago Association of Realtors Top Producer, and was named one of Chicago’s Most Influential Residential Real Estate Agents by Crain’s Custom Media in 2018. This year, he started donating a portion of his commissions to Orphans of the Storm Animal Shelter, where he had adopted his own pets.
