Real estate photographers across Chicago are facing unexpected disruptions after the Federal Aviation Administration issued a temporary flight restriction that effectively bans drone flights across much of the city through Oct. 12.
The restriction, listed on the FAA’s official database, went into effect Oct. 1 and cites “special security reasons” as its justification. A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesperson told WGN-TV that the temporary flight restriction is a result of aircraft systems being used against law enforcement during Midway Blitz.
The order applies to both manned and unmanned aircraft, though for most professionals in real estate photography, it means one thing: no drone flights allowed until further notice.
According to Crain’s Chicago Business, the FAA’s order has already disrupted real estate marketing efforts across the city. Several listings and promotional shoots have been postponed or canceled as photographers scramble to adjust.
The FAA map shows the ban covering downtown Chicago and extending into nearby neighborhoods and suburbs.
