For Realtors looking to sharpen their communication skills and elevate their client service, earning the Real Estate Negotiation Expert certification is a smart move — and it’s more accessible than you might think. Recognized by the National Association of REALTORS® as the premier credential in negotiation training, RENE equips agents with the tools they need to advocate effectively, build trust and stand out in a competitive marketplace.
To earn the certification, agents must complete a two-day course, available in three convenient formats: in person, live virtually or online self-paced. There are no prerequisites, which means that once the course is complete, the only remaining steps are to submit a simple application and pay a one-time $159 certification fee.
Erika Villegas, president of the Chicago Association of REALTORS®, said that during the certification process, Realtors walk through real-world scenarios and role play both the buying and the selling sides of a transaction.
But what do Realtors actually gain from completing RENE? According to Ginny Shipe, CEO of the Real Estate Business Institute (REBI), agents report significant professional growth and improved transaction outcomes after earning the certification. Many say they feel more confident negotiating on behalf of their clients, especially in tense or complex situations. The training helps them handle objections more strategically, guide conversations toward favorable outcomes and manage deals with less friction — all of which can lead to faster closings and more-satisfied clients.
Realtors also find that RENE helps boost their business. With enhanced listing presentations and better communication skills, they’re able to set clearer expectations and build stronger client relationships. In fact, many have used the certification as a marketing tool to position themselves as skilled negotiators, earning more referrals and winning more business, Shipe said.
Villegas said, “RENE helps Realtors understand how to read situations, adjust their communication style and use persuasive tactics to achieve better outcomes for their clients. We hear time and again how valuable the course is for boosting confidence in negotiation. From learning to ask high-quality questions to understanding different negotiation patterns and tactics, Realtors leave with practical tools they can use immediately.”
For clients, the value of working with a RENE-certified agent is clear, according to Shipe.
“It signals a commitment to professionalism, advanced training and client advocacy — qualities that today’s buyers and sellers value more than ever,” she said.
Once earned, the certification is easy to maintain. There are no continuing education or renewal fees — agents just need to remain Realtors in good standing. While the course isn’t tailored to specific state laws, its principles align with real estate best practices across the U.S., and instructors often bring in local insights when possible.
For agents ready to level up, RENE is more than just another credential — it’s a business-changing investment in skill, strategy and success.
“As we know from the NAR Profile of Buyer and Sellers, consumers consistently rank negotiation skills as the top trait they seek in their agents, so being able to market oneself as a Real Estate Negotiation Expert goes a long way in the eyes of potential clients,” Shipe said.
