Indonesian volcanoes, Irish countryside, blue Filipino lagoons — and Frank Lloyd Wright houses. These are some of the hallmarks that define Travel Lemmings’ list of world’s top 50 travel destinations.
Illinois’ own Oak Park came in at No. 48.
The Chicago suburb made the online travel guide’s ranking, thanks to its unique architecture. The pioneer of Prairie Style lived and worked in Oak Park for 20 years around the end of the 19th century, producing 25 buildings that still stand today. Those decades in Oak Park are widely considered as the architect’s golden age.
“A casual stroll around the suburb will take you past numerous examples of his work,” Travel Lemmings notes.
The area is historic for another reason, too: It’s the birthplace of author Ernest Hemingway.
According to the site, the Oak Park Conservatory and Mills Park are also worth visiting. Their advice is to visit between September and November, when the fall foliage is in full swing.
