Emilia Anderson Managing Broker

RCI Realty

What was your most interesting job before going into real estate?
I worked as an IT technician for DuPage County Circuit Court.

Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Chicago, in Albany Park.

Growing up, what did you want to be?
I wanted to be an attorney.

What do you do to relax when you’re stressed?
Everything spa-related — sauna, steam, facials, massages and yoga.

If you could meet any well-known figure (living or not), who would it be and why?
It would be Barbara Corcoran. Firstly, because “Shark Tank” is about the only television show I watch. Additionally, she can provide valuable information from her experiences in the industry. She also just seems like an easy-to-talk-to person.

What do you love most about the industry?
What I love about the real estate industry is how much it changes and how we have to know how to adapt to these changes. It’s a tough business, but if you have a flexible mindset and consistency, it can be a very rewarding career. I also appreciate the numerous avenues available in this business; there are plenty of opportunities for everyone to invest.

How do you distinguish yourself from the crowd of agents?
I am not only a managing broker, but also a general contractor. I have renovated several single-family and multi-unit homes and am currently working on two new-construction single-family homes. I began my career as a leasing agent and broker, specializing in short sales, and spent a lot of time at auctions. Currently, I own a boutique brokerage in its seventh year, and I am also a property manager.

What is the most difficult aspect of your job?
I wouldn’t say there is a difficult aspect of my job except for always wanting more and more; I am addicted to everything about real estate. I will admit that I’ve had people who wanted to enter the business and shadow me, but by the end of the week, I never hear from them again. It’s a tough business that requires thick skin and the ability to handle many no’s before you get to a yes.

What’s your best advice for generating new leads?
The best advice for generating leads is still my favorite: door knocking and letting everyone know that you’re in the business. Network! Choose a brokerage where you’re not just a sales agent but also around investors themselves so you can gain a better understanding of the business, especially if you’re interested in investing. Visit new construction sites and learn your product inside and out so you fully understand what you are selling or helping someone buy.

What has been your greatest accomplishment?
My biggest accomplishment is currently witnessing my two new construction projects in the making and expanding my real estate portfolio while never missing my children’s activities, all while living my dreams.

What are you binge-watching/reading/listening to lately?
Right now, I’m deep in a Bad Bunny obsession. He’s my workout buddy, and trust me, my treadmill has never seen someone dance so poorly!

What’s your favorite meal in Chicago?
If I had to choose just one, it’s the lentil soup from Cafe Istanbul in Wicker Park. I’d happily sip it daily!

Architecturally speaking, what is your favorite building in Chicago?
Since its completion, the Aqua Building has been my favorite. I enjoy everything soft, with ocean vibes and a relaxing atmosphere. When on the river looking at the building, it resembles a waterfall, which I absolutely love. It also has a delicate, soft appearance. It’s just an eye-catcher for me and still one of my favorites.

What’s the weirdest thing that’s ever happened to you on the job?
The weirdest thing that ever happened to me in real estate was when a seller tried to sweeten the deal by offering me a crisp $100 bill to sell their home. I guess they thought I was running a cash-for-listings operation!

What’s one thing people are surprised to learn about you?
People are always surprised to find out I have teenage twins.

What is your favorite vacation spot and why?
My favorite vacation spot is Puerto Rico.

In 10 words or less, what is your advice for someone new to the industry?
Consistency, self-motivation and network with experienced investors.
