Jevon Robertson Branch Manager

Champion Mortgage Group

Where did you grow up?
Chicago (Englewood, Roseland and Hyde Park areas).

What was your most interesting job before going into lending?
A facilities manager for a law firm.

What do you do to relax when you’re stressed?
Play golf, smoke cigars and watch baseball and basketball games.

If you could meet any well-known figure (living or not), who would it be and why?
I would love to meet Warren Buffett. I would want to know what his secrets are for success and maintaining his wealth, as well as what his advice would be for someone interested in investing.

Where is Chicago’s best-kept secret?
The Roseland and West Pullman areas for real estate investment.

What do you love most about the industry?
I love helping people achieve their dreams of homeownership. For me, it’s the smile on a client’s face when they sign that last document at the closing table. It’s so satisfying to watch as their eyes wander the table looking for their keys to their new home. To know that you played a part in that process is so rewarding.

What is the most difficult aspect of your job?
Telling a client “Not right now.” (I never tell a client “No.”) I always say “Not right now,” so not to discourage them.

What are you binge-watching/reading/listening to lately?
“Sneaky Pete” on Netflix, and I’m reading Will Smith’s book entitled “Will.”

What’s your favorite meal in Chicago?
Anything Italian.

Architecturally speaking, what is your favorite building in Chicago?
Holy Name Cathedral and the original Water Tower.

What’s the weirdest thing that’s ever happened to you on the job?
I had a client try to give me their antique car as a gift for getting them closed. Of course, I declined.

What’s one thing people might be surprised to learn about you?
I’m an extroverted introvert and I’m a bit of a nerd. I love old movies and can watch documentaries forever.

What’s your favorite vacation spot and why?
Cabos San Lucas or Jamaica.

In 15 words or less, what is your advice for someone new to the lending industry?
Find a mentor and make time for your family, no matter what.
