Chicago among geekiest cities in the nation

by Emily Mack

Some people dream of a house with a yard and a white picket fence … But others just want easy access to a comic book store. Some people are geeks. And in honor of Embrace Your Geekness Day — July 13, apparently — Lawn Love has compiled a list of the geekiest cities in the U.S. Chicago ranks at No. 7.

Metrics for the Lawn Love study include nerdy local events, like comic-cons and Renaissance fairs, plus access to collectables and cosplay materials. But above all, community factored in with the highest weight. As it turns out, Chicago has a lot of geek meetup groups. The city came in second in that category, trailing only New York City. Chicago also has the fourth highest number of both costume stores and comic book shops.

The study also noted one historic geek mecca: The Adler Planetarium. Built in 1930, the beloved museum was the first planetarium in the Western Hemisphere.

The rest of the top geekiest cities in the U.S. are:

1. New York City, N.Y.
2. Los Angeles, Calif.
3. Las Vegas, Nev.
4. Atlanta, Ga.
5. San Antonio, Texas
6. Houston, Texas
7. Chicago, Ill.
8. Orlando, Fla.
9. Austin, Texas
10. Portland, Ore.
