A new study from National Association of Home Builders found that approximately 71 percent of the 2,000 voters supported the mortgage interest deduction, according to National Mortgage News.


Among the 71 percent supporting the deduction, the study also found that only a portion, 63 percent, opposed efforts to reduce the deduction; many voters also supported tax breaks for HELOCs and second homes.

“Even when told that getting rid of the mortgage interest deduction would help ease the federal budget deficit, 65 percent of voters opposed any proposal to abolish the housing tax provision,” said NAHB to National Mortgage News.

A widely debated topic, the mortgage interest deduction has been met with opposition from International Monetary Fund, as well as many economists.
