Lakeshore East Master Plan Winner of Third Master Plan Award

by Chicago Agent

Proclaimed a ‘village in the heart of the city,’ the 28-acre Lakeshore East community rising on the New Eastside has been honored with its third major master plan award. The community being developed by Magellan Development Group was selected as the winner of the 2010 Daniel Burnham Award by AIA Illinois.

The honor awards by the Illinois American Institute of Architects were created to “recognize the people and projects representing the best of the architecture profession, the power of design and the dedication of individuals to service and excellence. All award winners exemplify positive impacts on regions great and small and help create move livable communities in Illinois.”

The Daniel Burnham Award recognizes the achievements of a project such as Lakeshore East that through master planning, design or implementation of a master plan by an AIA member firm enhances the natural and built environment of a community.

“We are delighted and honored that AIA Illinois has recognized the Lakeshore East community,” says James Loewenberg, co-CEO of Magellan and president of Loewenberg Architects, the architect of record for Lakeshore East.

The master plan, created by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill has won a National Honor Award for excellence in urban design from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and more recently the Prix d’Excellence International Design Award from the International Real Estate Federation. The Federation, officially constituted as FIABCI, represents 106 national real estate trade associations with a membership of more than two million real estate professionals from 60 countries, including Russia and China.

Lakeshore East

Rising steps from world-class attractions Michigan Avenue, Millennium Park, Lake Michigan and the Chicago River, Lakeshore East is believed to be the largest parcel of downtown land under development in a major U.S. city. This $4 billion mixed-use development incorporates all the elements of a traditional city neighborhood, a lifestyle center that includes homes, retail, recreational opportunities and a lush, award-winning 6-acre public park.

Park attractions include free Wi-Fi or wireless broadband Internet access, a children’s play park, a gated dog park, a large open meadow, water fountains, ornamental gardens and extensive seating. It has been named the Best New Park in Chicago by Chicago magazine and the city’s Best New Open Space by The Friends of Downtown.

Lakeshore East is regarded as a preview of the future, a mixed-use development where people can live, work, shop, eat and pursue whatever interests them without having to get into a car.

The plan that completes the ambitious Illinois Center development allows for the construction of a primarily residential neighborhood of some 10 million square feet of developed space centered by its park and a proposed elementary school.

Residential developments at Lakeshore East currently include seven completed and occupied buildings. They include the 29-story Lancaster, the community’s first condominium building with 209 homes; The Shoreham, a 46-story apartment tower with 548 residences; The Regatta, a 44-story condominium building with 325 units; The Chandler; a 35-story condominium building with 304 condo homes; 340 on The Park, a 62-story condominium tower with 344 units and the 51-story The Tides, the community’s second rental property with 607 luxury units; and The Parkhomes, an enclave of 25 gracious townhomes.

Construction on the internationally-celebrated Aqua, which is the first high-rise in the city designed uniquely to combine condominiums, rental apartments, hotel and retail spaces, was recently completed and occupancy of both rental and condo is well under way. Construction of the nation’s first Radisson Blu hotel is scheduled to begin this year in Aqua’s first 18 floors.

A diverse retail component of the community already includes a Fifth Third Bank facility, Café RoM gourmet coffee shop and a full-service CVS pharmacy. Roundy’s Supermarkets will anchor the Village Market, now under construction, with a 50,000-square-foot Mariano Fresh Market.
