Vol. 4, Issue 19, Developer Resume: Daniel McLean

by Chicago Agent

Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Iowa

Work Experience:
In the early 1970s, Dan McLean worked as a loan officer in Lincoln Park. Not content with only making loans, he soon got out from behind the desk, began buying six-flats in Lincoln Park and started developing new homes. Dan McLean founded MCL Companies in 1976 and hasn’t looked back.

Since that time, MCL has gained a reputation for carving new neighborhoods from Chicago’s urban landscape. Whether expanding the Lincoln Park boundaries, or creating new neighborhoods in the South Loop (Central Station) and Old Town Square and Village, MCL creates residential developments where people want to live. In that wake follows new restaurants, stores and other destination businesses.

The nation’s eyes were on MCL as the company helped transform the former Cabrini-Green neighborhood with the Mohawk North, Old Town Square and Village developments. These developments successfully integrated former CHA residents into new public housing, indistinguishable from market-rate housing, to create thriving mixed-income communities.

MCL’s biggest ongoing project, and one of the most ambitious in the nation, is the River East neighborhood in Streeterville. When completed near 2010, the 13-acre, $2 billion development, located along the north bank of the Chicago River between Lake Michigan and Michigan Avenue, and adjacent to Navy Pier, will have added a population of 3,000 residents, parking for 4,000 cars, a hotel, restaurants, exciting new retail stores, a 21-screen cinema complex, tree-lined walkways on Illinois and a promenade along the Chicago River. MCL Companies has transformed Illinois Street into a walking, talking boulevard connecting people from Michigan Avenue to Navy Pier.

Current Projects:
ParkView Condominiums – A sleek 47-story, 268-unit tower in silver and glass located at 505 N. McClurg Court. It consists of one-, two- and three-bedroom condos ranging from 1,053 to 1,803 square feet. MCL is also constructing a fully landscaped, 70,000-square-foot park adjacent to ParkView.

MetroPlace – Located at 2500 W. Roosevelt Road on the Near West Side, MetroPlace is the next stage in MCL’s unbroken record of successfully creating new neighborhoods. Two-and three-bedroom condos total 1,320 to 1,370 square feet, while three-story, four- to five-bedroom single-family homes boast 3,050 square feet. Two- and three-bedroom townhomes are 1,791 to 2,250 square feet and feature attached garages and private rooftop decks.

The Lofts at River East Art Center – MCL is converting the office building portion of the River East Art Center, 435 E. Illinois St., into a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom condos.

Recently Completed:
RiverView II – Located at 415 E. North Water, RiverView II offers 148 two- to five-bedroom condos and 11 waterfront townhomes at the base of the building. It is 97 percent sold out.

Community Involvement:
McLean is a director trustee of the Steppenwolf Theater Co. He also serves as trustee of Columbia College, is a board member of the Chicago Central Area Committee and belongs to the Lincoln Park Builders’ Club of Chicago. In 1992, as chairman of the Chicago Division of the Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago, McLean launched the first inner-city Parade of Homes, located in the Kenwood/Oakland neighborhood.
