Meg Wood & Russell Burton, Brokers

BurtonWood Residential, Compass

When COVID-19 hit, Meg Wood and Russell Burton had no idea what the next year was going to look like. “We saw a big pause in action from mid-March until the end of April, but from May of 2020 until now has been the busiest stretch of our careers,” report Wood and Burton, brokers with BurtonWood Residential at Compass. “We had to adjust quickly and strategically, whether it was health and safety protocols or just trying to navigate this market with an unprecedented amount of demand.”

Fortunately, their strategy worked and they more than doubled their business from the previous year. “We are a husband-and-wife team,” they say, “so it’s extremely beneficial for our clients, because they get the benefit of two experienced agents working in sync on their behalf.”

Named top producers by the Chicago Association of Realtors since 2017, Wood and Burton focus on first-time and trade-up buyers, investors and sellers in the city and suburbs. “The vast majority of our business comes from referrals and our sphere of influence,” they share. “We’re lucky to have worked with a lot of great people, and those relationships have been a huge asset to growing our business.”

Every client receives a high level of communication, education and attention to detail. “When you’re working with a broker, it’s a business relationship, but we are personally involved with all of our clients,” they insist. “Being able to connect on a friendship level helps everyone work together in harmony.”

Since the two have assisted with diverse properties over the years — condos, single-family homes, multi-units, deconversions and investment properties — they are experts at handling any curveballs that come up.

“We love the all-encompassing parts of the job,” the pair say. “From the people to the homes to the financial and negotiating aspects, it’s what attracted us to the business and keeps us going.”

When they get a break from work, they’re all about connecting with family: their parents; their two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Tessa; and their dog, a vizsla named Annie.
