Mallinckrodt in the Park

by Chicago Agent

Mallinckrodt in the ParkWilmette

Located on a 14-acre park in Wilmette, the newly revitalized condominiums of the historic Mallinckrodt in the Park offer a space that caters specifically to active seniors.

The five-story, 180,000-square-foot Italian Renaissance structure was remodeled with the active, independent senior in mind. The Wilmette Senior Center, located at the south end of the building, offers a variety of programs run by the Wilmette Park District.

The property was initially built as a convent and college, and has been considered a landmark of Wilmette since 1918. In 2005, construction began in order to create these luxury condominiums for seniors. Remnants of the convent can be seen in the remodeled building, as the former chapel was converted into two penthouse units with cathedral-style arched windows and 30-foot ceilings. The original cupola, bell tower, limestone detailing and Romanesque curves maintain the spirit of the historical building.

All units, which typically range from one to three bedrooms, include a minimum of 9-foot ceilings with hardwood floors in the foyer, living room, dining room and kitchen. Other features include wood cabinetry, stainless steel appliances, granite countertops and indoor parking.

How long have you been with the project? I have been involved in the project since the conception in 2004 when the original developer presented the project to the village of Wilmette. I’ve been there through the rough times and the not-so-rough times. Fortunately, the new owners have taken over the property and lowered the prices 30 to 40 percent, since then we have had 14 contracts.

What makes Mallinckrodt unique? It is a total rehab job of a gorgeous 180,000-square-foot Romanesque brick and limestone building from 1918. There was a chapel within the building, of which beauty and detail still exists. Having all new windows and mechanicals in a building with old world grandeur and charm sets it far apart from others.

What’s the difference between working on a rehab and working on a from-scratch new construction project? This rehab is different in that the structure was built to higher standards beyond any new construction project today. Taller ceilings, thicker walls and old word architecture can’t be found in new construction today. Unfortunately, building a structure today like the Mallinckrodt was built in the early 1900s is cost prohibited.
