Chicago one of the best cities for bicycling in the country

by Timothy Inklebarger

Think your city is the most bike friendly? Well, if you live in Chicago, you’re pretty darn close.

That’s according to online real estate marketplace Redfin, which released its annual Most Bikeable U.S. Cities, ranking Chicago at No. 3.

The ranking is based on a number of factors, such as access to bike lanes, hilliness and the number of destinations accessible via bicycle.

Chicago inched up one place from the 2018 ranking (the most recent available) with a bike score of 73 out of 100. The score is described by Bike Score, a Redfin tool which conducted the analysis, as “very bikeable,” meaning that biking is convenient for most trips.

Illinois also was recently recognized by the League of American Bicyclists as the sixteenth best state in the union for bicycling. That’s due to the state’s 19 bicycle-friendly communities, 23 bicycle-friendly businesses and 10 bicycle-friendly universities.

At the top of WalkScore.com’s list this year was Minneapolis, with a Bike Score of 84. That puts the top city in the same category as Chicago as very bikeable.
