“Home Alone” made young MaCaulay Culkin a household name in 1990. But the house itself is just as memorable: stately and massive with its Georgian architecture and quaint suburban setting. Now, the titular home is for sale — for $5.25 million.
Katie Moor of the Dawn McKenna Group with Coldwell Banker Realty serves as listing agent.
The property boasts five bedrooms, six bathrooms and 9,126 square feet of space, total. And, although the home was built in 1921, aspects have been updated with modern luxury touches; a major re-model took place in 2018. Features include cathedral ceilings, a wet and dry bar, a hot tub, a gym, an indoor sports court, a screening room, a screened-in porch and both hardwood and heated floors.
Located in Winnetka at 671 Lincoln Ave., the home is also emblematic of writer-director John Hughes’ historic, local oeuvre. Raised in Northbrook, Hughes used the Chicago suburbs to tell coming-of-age stories which are now synonymous with American teenage-dom. In addition to “Home Alone,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” “The Breakfast Club,” “Sixteen Candles” and “Uncle Buck” all take place along the North Shore.
Although “Home Alone’s” interior scenes were mainly shot on a sound stage at the former New Trier West High School, several scenes were filmed within 671 Lincoln Ave., on the home’s legendary staircase as well as in various other rooms.
Since that filming took place, the cinematic house has sold just once, in 2012, for $2.4 million. Now priced significantly higher, it’s a confident buyer who might say, “Keep the change ya filthy animal!” But they’ll get to throw some epic Christmas parties.
