Playing by the rules

It should come as no surprise that I’m not a big fan of following the rules. That’s why I own a private island. The only rules I have to follow there are the ones that I make up for visitors, and even then I don’t have to follow the rules — because it’s my island. When it comes to my business, though, I know how important it is to play by the rules. So even if reading an issue about rules doesn’t sound like the most fun way to start off the new year, it’s kind of important to understand things like continuing education requirements so you don’t lose your license or anything silly like that.

New year, new gossip. I sure hope Joe Caltabiano’s daughter enjoyed the American Girl doll he was seen buying for her as a Christmas present. I mean, I assume it was for her, but if it was for his own personal collection, that’s fine as well. Nothing to be ashamed of — those dolls are fancy.

Kieran Conlon took a trip down memory lane when he visited his alma mater, Purdue. He even took some time to pop into Harry’s Chocolate Shop. No word on whether eating better is on his list of resolutions. Either way, a little chocolate never hurt anyone. You have to splurge sometimes.

Sam Powell hosted a pierogi-making day with Mike Opyd, his wife, his parents and others. The goal was to share the pierogis with friends and family on Christmas Day, but I wonder how many they shared and how many they ate themselves. It’s hard to pass up freshly made pierogis when they’re right in front of you.

Carrie McCormick shared that Fox News is doing a segment on one of her real estate projects. I wasn’t able to find any more information, so Carrie let me know what the segment was about, or I’ll have to make inappropriate guesses.

Marki Lemons-Ryhal was named the director of education for Exit Strategy Realty and made the announcement via Facebook Live on Dec. 11. I’m taking a break from Facebook right now (I may or may not have been asked to leave for a period of time), so I didn’t see the actual announcement, but I admire her efforts to shake things up with technology.

Year-end events are always fun, but they sort of slow down once everyone has properly celebrated the holiday season. One event worth noting is the Association of South Asian Real Estate Professionals gala on Dec. 15 at The Meadows Club in Rolling Meadows. Some really cool people were invited, like the Consulate General of India. Fun was had by all, and apparently some learning went on, as the invite promised “edutainment,” a word I resolve to use more in 2018.

A number of folks rang in the new year by celebrating their birthday in early January. Leslie Struthers started everyone off with a birthday on Jan. 2, while Kelly Price ate some cake on Jan. 5. Marc Churchill blows out the candles on Jan. 7, and Gary Ouellette, Jennifer Petersen and JD Cortese are birthday triplets on Jan. 12. Kevin Rocio celebrates on lucky No. 13, while Alex Zupancic, Camille Kearns Rudy, Jeff Baker and Vince Milito can have a party all by themselves celebrating their shared birthday on Jan. 14.
