Chicago is the sixth most walkable city in the U.S., according to Walk Score’s 2017 Report.

The report, released in May, only considers cities with populations over 300,000 and factors distance from amenities, density of population, block length and pedestrian friendliness into cities’ ultimate walkability scores. Miami moved from No. 5 to its current No. 4 spot while every other city featured retains their 2016 rankings.

Chicago keeps its sixth spot but sees a 0.03 decrease in their walk score compared to last year’s. It’s a minute difference for a city that has been the sixth most walkable in the nation for three years now, according to past reports. Not only is Chicago walkable but the city also holds a sixth ranking nationally for transit-friendliness, according to Redfin.

Chicago’s placement in these reports satisfies residents seeing as nine out of 10 locals surveyed in a recent Redfin study planned to stay in the area. Chicago’s walkability may well be why residents are loyal to the city, but its relative safety is another draw.

According to a Smart Growth America study measuring American cities’ street safety, Chicago ranked above average. The city had a Pedestrian Danger Index (PDI) of 34.2 beating the national average of 53.8. Its high placement in both the Walk Score and Smart Growth America reports prove Chicago as not only a great place to stroll, but also a safe one.
