Trulia.com: Real Estate Search Patterns Shifting

Recently named in the 60 Genius Brands to watch list, real estate search site Trulia.com has compiled data regarding its growth since its 2006 launch, and presented it graphically, showing strength particularly in Florida and California.

On the graphs below, each shaded area represents a ZIP code where a house for sale was viewed by a web visitor on Trulia, with large cities having higher volumes of traffic. Trulia says this “makes sense since there are a lot more homes to buy in bigger metro areas,” and that is expected as the populations become more dense.

Additionally, Trulia says that “rather than just illustrating each property view as a single dot that gets lit up when a home gets checked out in a ZIP code, we’re adding another layer of detail – popularity,” with each shaded spike below representing a ZIP code where a house for sale was viewed; the tallest spikes are the most popular. The two graphs below show the ZIP codes’ popularity from Trulia.com’s launch in August 2006 and its most recent data from December 2011.

The company outlines the most popular ZIP codes, noting that 90210 is the most popular zip code, possibly because “a lot of fans looking at L.A. for their next move couldn’t resist checking out what Beverly Hills has to offer,” as it was made popular by Aaron Spelling’s continuing television teen drama. Florida’s east and west coasts were more popular than the north or south of the state, while the only city in the Midwest to make the top 20 was Chicago.
