Originally designed by Schmidt, Garden and Martin and completed in 1898, Six North Michigan was built as the headquarters for retailer Montgomery Ward, a pioneer in the mail-order business. The founder, Aaron Montgomery Ward, whose office looked out over the lake, was instrumental in preserving the open lakefront and creating Grant Park. It was the tallest building in Chicago from 1899 to 1922, when it was surpassed by the Wrigley Building.
After Montgomery Ward relocated, Six North Michigan served as an office building for many years. It is now being transformed by DeStefano + Partners into homes with open floor plans with modern features and finishes. Located at the center of the city, across from Millennium Park, Six North Michigan features one-, two- and three-bedroom residences as well as a penthouse.
The homes have high ceilings, oak hardwood flooring and Halo track lighting in main living areas, recessed lighting in the hallways, custom 7-foot solid core interior doors with Omnia designer hardware and shelving systems in the closets.
The kitchens feature Scavolini Italian cabinetry from Accento Italia, Mirage oak hardwood floors, granite or quartz countertops with matching backsplash and a luxury appliance package. The master bathrooms have Scavolini double bowl vanity cabinets with granite or quartz countertops, Toto Rendezvous white oval undermount sinks with polished chrome faucets, honed-finish Italian porcelain tile on the floor and a Whirpool air-jetted bathtub.
Building amenities include three passenger elevators, a 24-hour lobby attendant and a fitness center with a full range of cardio and weight equipment, as well as a steam room and shower. There is a club room, private theater, community terrace and heated garage parking is available. The assessment budget includes all gas and water charges, as well as local telephone, basic cable and Internet services.
