Matthew Koch
SVP Residential Mortgage Division
Fifth Third Mortgage
In his own words, Matthew Koch, senior vice president of Fifth Third Bank’s Mortgage Division, has “an inordinate amount of passion for this business,” and every one of his 23 years of experience prove his point. Koch is on the board of directors for the Illinois Mortgage Bankers Association and the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. He has also been named as a President’s Circle member several times over his career. He holds an MBA, an undergraduate degree in finance, and a minor in marketing.
Koch’s passion for what he does is evident to everyone he works with, and he surrounds himself with people who are equally passionate. “I love building businesses,” he says. “It’s a passion of mine, and I love working with passionate people. They simply ignite me, and it’s thrilling to see them succeed and break through belief barriers when it comes to their production.” He credits his father with teaching him business design and process management, and his personal mentor and coach Todd Duncan for pushing him to build a successful origination business. The experience of working his way up from loan originator, he says, helps him understand the business from pre-qualifying a customer to taking a quality loan application and navigating any pitfalls. In this way, he helps his loan officers and managers fulfill their current roles. “I truly understand how hard it is to attract customers, keep them, and bring them to a successful close.”
Though Koch’s love of the industry and client focus have taken him far, he says his success “really lies in the employees I have been fortunate enough to coach and develop.” He is proud of his loan officers for their accomplishments and future successes. His division claimed eight MLOs of the top 20 loan officers in the company last year. “Our goal is to take all 20 President Circle Spots within the company,” he says. Koch sees exciting things in the business’s future. “Our reputation and focus as an organization has seen such a huge turnaround as we truly focus on becoming a world-class mortgage company. Our investment of more than $30 million into the mortgage company this year will create great capabilities to compete in a global marketplace.”
Koch also finds inspiration outside of work. “My personal inspiration is my kids,” he says. “I’m excited with all they are accomplishing, and the great individuals they are becoming.” Living by his president’s motto – “You build a better bank by building a better community” – Koch is also involved in the organization Rebuild Together. “It’s super important that I lead by example alongside my managers and employees, and continue to give back to the communities we serve.”
