Exotic serenity in Macon, Ga.

by Emily Mack

A mansion in Macon, Ga. is home to America’s largest private Chinese garden — and it’s for sale. With a lot size larger than 15 acres, the home itself is nearly 17,000 square feet full of with elaborate interior features: five bedrooms, six bathrooms, high ceilings, a number of fireplaces, stainless steel appliances, a wine cellar, a ballet studio, a sauna and even a Chinese-themed entertaining room.

Built in 1946, the unique property was meant to emulate historic Chinese estates. The original owner, a sinophile, had traveled to China with an engineer in order to construct the authentic Georgia replica, according to real estate agent Regan Skinner. In addition to the intricate Chinese garden, the grounds include an extensive residential fountain system, Koi ponds, a church chapel, a swimming pool and gazebo: all perfect for reflecting. And for entertaining, there’s a wet bar and a walk-out veranda extending from a ballroom on the main level.

The home at 1386 Waverland Drive is currently listed for $2,500,000. Skinner, of the brokerage Keller Williams Middle Georgia, is handling the resale. He hopes the next owner will have big plans for the unique space. Although it’s a single-family residence, the home is designed for both private and public events — and is a storied addition to the Macon landscape. “This whimsical and magical property can be yours! Live your very own fairy tale,” the Zillow listing reads.
