See which paint colors can help boost sales prices

by Lauren Brocato

Choosing paint colors is perfect way to reflect your style onto your home. But, when it comes time to sell, the colors you chose may not appeal to potential buyers. Zillow is here to help with their 2018 Paint Color Analysis which revealed paint colors that are most likely to boost the sale price of your home and appeal to potential buyers.

The analysis measured more than 135,000 photos from listings and identified which paint colors were associated with a home selling for more or less than its Zestimate when compared to similar homes with white walls.

Curb appeal can directly affect the price of a home on the market. You can bump up the price of your house nearly 3 percent simply by painting the front door black. Homes with black doors typically sell for about $6,000 more than expected. Another exterior color tip is to stay away from yellow. Homes with a creamy yellow or yellow flax exterior reportedly sell for roughly $3,000 less than expected.

“For a seller, painting a front door is one the least expensive home prep projects, but also one that can have a powerful impact on a home’s sale price,” said Kerrie Kelly, Zillow home design expert.

Now onto the bestselling interior colors. The study found that homes with cool, neutral wall colors appeal to many buyers and also sold for more than expected. A sprinkle of color throughout the house was also found to be beneficial to home prices. Periwinkle blue bathrooms, for example, added about $2,700 to sales prices while light taupe living rooms added nearly $3,000.

“While cool, neutral wall colors like tan and light blue are still popular, we’re seeing a notable shift in home design where pops of color — particularly in darker hues of blue and gray to even black — are becoming increasingly popular,” Kelly said. “Contrasting colors, especially in kitchens and home exteriors add interest and dimension to a room that plays very well in listing photos and videos.”
