Tony Lupescu brings his experience as a CPA to the mortgage profession. “I have a great understanding of numbers and making sure all the details are reviewed before moving forward on a transaction,” says Lupescu, a senior mortgage loan officer with Fifth Third Bank.

Having left a career in accounting in 2004 to pursue a new path, Lupescu has found that following his heart has led to success. He was Fifth Third Bank’s 2017 top producer companywide, an honor he has earned for six consecutive years. Recently, he was named Best Mortgage Loan Officer for Large Banks by the Illinois Mortgage Bankers Association. For a second consecutive year, he was ranked by Mortgage Executive magazine among America’s top 200 mortgage loan originators for total loan volume.

Lupescu loves the challenge of figuring out how to structure a deal and close it by thinking outside the box. Each month, he takes on clients that were denied by other lenders and tries to find a way to make the deal work, if possible. “Especially for self-employed borrowers, I can analyze the tax returns using my accounting background to utilize all the income I can, to make a deal work when others cannot,” he says.

His three areas of expertise in the business are first-time homebuyers, jumbo loans and mortgage loans for doctors. With first-time buyers, he takes the necessary time and consultation that is required for somebody who knows nothing about the process to understand and feel comfortable with it. “There will never be a time where a new buyer would be surprised by any costs or fees in the transaction,” he says. “I also close many jumbo loans and Fifth Third Bank has a unique mortgage loan product specifically for doctors and dentists.” In this space, he has become a leader in the industry, both locally and nationally, conducting business across the country.

“I listen to clients’ goals and present them with different options to fill their needs,” he says, adding that it’s important to provide choices and explain how each might impact the loan. In the end, he wants clients to feel like they are making the best lending decision for themselves and their families.
