The Top-Selling Suburbs in Chicagoland

by Peter Thomas Ricci

Where, in the vast wilderness of Chicagoland’s suburbs, are home sales the highest?

Last week, we reported that after a disappointing couple of months, home sales in the Chicagoland area jolted back in a major way in March, with the city’s top-selling neighborhoods very much demonstrating that strength.

Specific to the suburban housing markets, though, what areas saw the most home sales? Using the latest round of exclusive monthly data from our friends at Redfin, we put together a series of graphs answering just that question.

First, here are the communities that saw the most total home sales:

Another month, another top spot for might Aurora. When we compared the homes in that and other communities, though, we found that like Chicago’s neighborhoods, sales activity was up by a substantial amount. Case in point:

•For Aurora, sales rose from 125 to 171, a 36.8 percent increase.

•The increase was even stronger for No. 2 Naperville, where sales rose 58.5 percent from 106 to 168.

•Other strong increases include Joliet (20.7 percent), Elgin (50.7 percent) and Schaumburg (53.7 percent).

Our next graph looks solely at single-family sales:

As you can see, aside from the inclusion of St. Charles and Downers Grove, things are not too different on the single-family side.

Breaking it down even further, though, and looking at condos and townhomes, does mix things up a bit:

Now, Naperville holds the top spot, and Evanston vaults to No. 3 and Schaumburg to No. 4.

Stay tuned for our follow-up report next week, which will look at what suburban markets are the most competitive, in terms of inventory and time on market.
