According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the amount of married households in the United States now accounts for less than half of all households.

The Census Bureau’s ‘Households, by Type: 1940 to Present’ table reports there were a total of 117,538,000 households in the United States during 2010. Of these households, a total of 58,410 – or 49.7 percent – were made up of married couples.

The data shows that single moms account for 12.6 percent of all households in 2010, while single dads at the head of the house make up 4.7 percent. Non-family households made up 33 percent of American households in 2010.

Over the past 50 years, the ratio of married households has come down from a rate of 74 percent of households being married in 1960.
