I feel the best benefit of my association, Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago, is education. The additional courses that are offered give members the certification necessary to make them more credible, which in turn makes them more marketable. I have gone through a number of the continuing education courses and I now instruct many of them. Outside the classroom, even the members meetings are motivational and informative. The other important benefit of belonging to my association is the opportunity for networking.

In my view, the outstanding benefit offered by the Chicago Association of Realtors is its advocacy for our industry at the state and local levels. In the positions it advocates, CAR does an effective job of balancing the interests of real estate professionals with those of the public we serve. CAR took an aggressive role in leading public opposition to the recent real estate transfer tax increase in Cook County. The increase was eventually approved, but on the whole CAR does a good job of speaking thoughtfully for our industry on a wide range of issues.

The Chicago Association of Realtors (CAR) has a great Member Profitability Program. For this program, CAR brings in experts from all different fields of work related to real estate, like attorneys or inspectors, to conduct lectures and roundtables about relevant subjects. Usually, when I take the time to attend, I learn something new, and I’m pleased.

Besides CAR’s continuing education course offerings, I benefit from the statewide housing statistics released on a monthly basis by the Illinois Association of Realtors (IAR). Also, they have recently affiliated with the University of Illinois to develop a housing forecasting model, so I look forward to gaining insight from the commentary included in each release. Finally, I appreciate the foundations IAR has created such as Partnership for HomeOwnership Inc., which helps low-income residents achieve the dream of home ownership.
