Tryon Farm, Michigan City, Ind.

by Chicago Agent

If you need a relief from the concrete and steel jungle of Chicago, consider purchasing at Tryon Farm, a developing community that ranks environmental stewardship as a top priority. Approximately three-quarters of the 170-acre landscape will always be preserved as rolling pasture, meadows, woods and ponds. The architects working on the project are designing contemporary houses to fit together in small settlements where everyone has protected, long views toward wetlands, prairie and farmland.

Houses range in size from 400 to 3,500 square feet, and are grouped in seven settlements. Tryon Farm’s structures continue the aesthetic integrity of the original farm buildings, and provide contemporary luxury.

Tryon Farm has a variety of simple houses with high ceilings, lofts, farm country paneling, practical kitchens and baths, screen porches and private, walled yards. They cost more than production/tract houses, but less than custom homes. They are built with 2 X 6 stud walls, are heavily insulated, and have high-efficiency HVAC. The builders utilize bamboo floors, sod roofs, recycled denim insulation and thicker walls to minimize environmental impact and maximize efficiency.

A two-story screened porch is the signature feature of the custom, Flat Top house in the woods. Complete with a series of large windows offering unobstructed views through the trees that encircle it, the house has an open floor plan that includes dining/kitchen and living areas (with optional wood stove), half bathroom and screened porch on the first floor. A large bedroom (or two smaller ones if divided), full bathroom and walk-in closet are located on the second floor. The rooftop is designed for additional rooms and a deck to further experience the surrounding woods.

The outdoor courtyard of the Garden House on the Meadow is the focal point of the vaulted living area, master bedroom and screened porch. The second floor of this house works as either a family room or library loft which opens to the first floor living areas and a second bedroom and bathroom. The Garden House on the Meadow has an efficient floor plan that retains an open feeling, making best use of the 1,100 enclosed square feet.

With its expansive, flowing space, the 2,068 square-foot Barn House offers spatial qualities and country views usually reserved for houses of much larger size. From the private courtyard, the enclosed stairway leads to the large living, dining and screened porch combination. A family-sized kitchen has an eating area with a long view. A guest bedroom and bath are adjacent to the living room. On the upper floor is a high-ceilinged loft with a fireplace and an open deck over the screened porch. The master bedroom, closets and bath complete the house and offer privacy and long views to the prairie and pond.
