Chicago Association of Realtors

Chicago Association of Realtors

Associations set out to help members increase their success and enhance their careers.

In her 15 years of managing associations, Michelle Mills Clement, chief executive officer of the Chicago Association of Realtors (CAR), has learned that regardless of the industry, the most important part of her job is member engagement — soliciting their honest feedback and providing new opportunities for learning, innovation and professional growth. Having that type of valuable leadership is essential in real estate, an industry that continues to change and evolve.

The voice of real estate in Chicago, CAR has more than 14,500 members and is one of the premier real estate associations in the country. Before CAR, Mills Clement honed her skills leading associations for commercial real estate brokers and developers in Washington. She earned a certificate in commercial real estate from the University of Washington and a Certified Association Executive (CAE) certification from the American Society of Association Executives.

“Real estate touches so many people,” Mills Clement says, whether that means buying or renting a home, visiting retail stores or working in office buildings. “It’s a part of our day-to-day lives. I love being able to continue to educate people on the industry and its importance.”

Mills Clement is a 2013 Scholar of the American Society of Association Executive’s Diversity Executive Leadership Program and a recipient of the 2013 Young and Aspiring Association Professional Award from Association TRENDS. She was also among the 2014 Association Forum of Chicagoland’s Forty under 40 and Women of Excellence in Male-dominated Careers by the Women of Color Empowered and Northwest Asian Weekly.

Most notably, Mills Clement has the ability to bring out the unique skills and traits of individuals, and to give them access to additional tools that will help them flourish.

“Several people did this for me during my career,” she says. “It’s important to me and something I hone in on when working with staff and members.” Her colleagues like that she is collaborative, organized, driven and efficient. “I like everyone to be part of the team,” she says. “My goal is to always help increase productivity and make it easier for them to do their work.”

A wife, mother and dedicated volunteer in the community, she focuses most of her service projects on children and child advocacy.
