MRED CEO Russ Bergeron will be participating in a panel discussion at Inman News’ Real Estate Connect Conference in San Francisco.

Russ Bergeron, the CEO of Midwest Real Estate Data (MRED), the Chicagoland multiple listing service, was a panelist at Inman News’ Real Estate Connect Conference in San Francisco.

This industry leading conference, which took place from August 1 to August 3, attracted the real estate industry’s most influential leaders, decision makers, innovators and experts.

Updating the MLS

Bergeron participated in a panel session called “Updating the MLS” on August 2, which included a discussion of what it is going to take to create the MLS of tomorrow, with examinations of the technological, legal and business issues that need to be addressed to update outdated practices and to remove some of the limitations facing MLS customers and vendors today.

“This is a subject close to my heart and always on my mind,” Bergeron said. “I look forward to exchanging thoughts and ideas with my peers and the very best thinkers in the industry. Our mission is to ‘reinvent MLS,’ so I am very comfortable participating on such a panel and addressing what I feel are the most critical issues facing MLSs and real estate professionals in general.”

The MLS as a Technology Business

In comments to Chicago Agent, Bergeron said he focused on different technological components of real estate and multiple listings services in his comments on the panel.

“We don’t necessarily need bigger MLSs, but we should create bigger MLS databases (regional, state, super-regional) and allow people to access with whatever software they choose,” Bergeron said. “MLSs are technology companies, not associations – and should be run as a technology business.”

Also, Bergeron had some specific advice for agents and tech vendors alike.

“Technology for technology’s sake is not the answer – if you are a bad Realtor, technology can only make you badder [sic] faster,” he said. “Tech vendors – stop saying you are the ‘leading,’ the ‘best,’ the ‘first’ – chances are you are not.”
