Carla Walker is a broker associate with Prudential Rubloff in Chicago.

What was your first job in the realty industry? A Realtor associate at Koenig & Strey in Chicago.

Where did you grow up? In Edgebrook, on the Northwest side of Chicago.

What is your favorite free-time activity? Working out, golfing and hanging out with friends.

If you weren’t a Realtor, what would you be? I’d be a financial analyst. I used to play in the stock market as a hobby, and I was pretty good at it.

If you could have lunch with a well-known figure (living or not), who would it be and why? That’s a tough one. Just one person? I think it would have to be President John F. Kennedy. He was someone I would have liked to know better.

Where is your favorite place to hang out? Locally, I’d have to say it’s at the Peninsula Hotel. I like the outdoor terrace there in the summer. In the winter, I like RL. I also love to spend time in Michigan at my friend’s house on the lake.

What do you love most about the industry? I love the freedom I have to make my own schedule. I also enjoy most of the people I get to meet and help make decisions, including other agents that I do business with!

How do you distinguish yourself from the crowd of agents? I am very committed to building relationships. It’s never been just about making the transaction for me. I also continually strive to educate myself by taking new courses that I feel will improve my business acumen. Ours is an ever-changing industry, and I don’t want to ever feel like a dinosaur!

What is the most difficult aspect of your job? I’d have to say the most difficult part of my job is when I give it my all, do everything I can to make things happen, and then the deal falls apart.

Where do you go to network and meet new clients? I don’t have one particular place. I attend charity events, am a member of a great organization that helps victims of domestic violence, work out regularly at a great health club and stay in touch with my clients. My sphere of influence is where I get most of my new clients from. Word of mouth from past clients is key.

What has been your greatest accomplishment? Learning to drive almost anywhere in the city without getting lost! Before I got into real estate, my husband always did the driving, so I never really had to navigate myself, much less use a map!

What was the last good movie you saw or book you read? I recently saw The Help. It was a great movie. I can’t remember the last book I read. I usually read a book when I go on vacation. I’m too distracted when I’m here.

What is your favorite restaurant? I adore seafood, so I’d have to say Joe’s Stone Crab. If it’s steak, it’s Morton’s.

What kind of car do you drive? A Lexus.

Smartphone or paper? Smartphone.

What is your advice for someone new to the industry? Call everyone you know, and you will come up with a lead!
