Veronica Tapia is a Realtor with Tapia Realty, Chicago.

What was your first job in the realty industry? I started my career at CitiSales Realty in 2001.

Where did you grow up? I was born in Ecuador but moved to the U.S. in 1989. I have lived in Chicago ever since and love the city.

What is your favorite free-time activity? I love to relax by doing simple things, like reading or watching a good movie.

What do you do to relax when you’re stressed? Listen to music and turn off the cell phone for a little while.

Growing up, what did you want to be? A flight attendant.

If you could have lunch with a well-known figure (living or not), who would it be and why? Yma Sumac. There was something about her that almost no entertainer seems to posses nowadays.

Where is your favorite place to hang out? A good restaurant.

What do you love most about the industry? The ability to make my own schedule. There have been days where I have worked 12 hours, but some days where I have worked just two; I love that!

How do you distinguish yourself from the crowd of agents? I go the extra mile. I take charge. I will assist my clients even beyond the closing date. From getting them pre-approved to picking up paint at the Home Depot for their new house, I’m there!

What is the most difficult aspect of your job? Unreasonable sellers and buyers. Luckily, that is when experience comes in handy.

Where do you go to network and meet new clients? Just
about everywhere.

What has been your greatest accomplishment? Professionally, being able to work pro bono. Personally, the fact that I am able to have lifelong friends.

What is your favorite restaurant? It is very difficult to name just one. Chicago is famous for its restaurants, but a few that I would love to go back to are The Portage, Katsu, Mercat a la Planxa, Sol de Mexico and Yoshi’s Cafe.

Architecturally speaking, what is your favorite building in Chicago? The Field Houses for the Chicago Park District. The ones at Humboldt Park and Riis Park are some of my favorites.

Smartphone or paper? Both. I am all about balance.

What is your favorite city after Chicago? I would have to say the city I was born in; Cuenca, Ecuador. It was named the UNESCO World Heritage Trust site.

In 10 words or less, what is your advice for someone new to the industry? Be persistent. Be honest. Do your best.
