There’s an art to divining a homebuyer’s true desires. Even the most elite of real estate agents can’t read minds, which can often feel like a serious disadvantage in an emotional, high-stakes transaction like a home purchase.

Consider this issue your crystal ball. We spoke with Chicagoland buyers who’d worked with various local agents about their experiences – what they looked for in an agent, how they found their agents, their impressions of the homebuying process and, perhaps most importantly, what their agents did right, and where they went wrong. Our buyers (all of whom had written online reviews of their agents) had clear opinions on what they wanted their agents to share with them, when and how, the qualities they prioritized in an agent, and how those perceptions may have changed as they moved through the homebuying process.

According to NAR’s 2015 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers, only 59 percent of homebuyers said they were satisfied with their recent home purchase, though that was a 3 percent increase from the previous year. How did our local sources’ buying experiences compare to homebuyers on a national scale?
